WMV is one of many video formats which in this case has been compressed through the use of various codecs from Microsoft.
In 2006 the organization SMPTE made WMV an open standard and due to this has become one of the formats used for delivering HD DVD and Blu-ray content.
ASF is a container format that supports DRM protection and these media containers are used to hold WMV files, other container formats that can be used with WMV are AVI and Matroska.
Variable, constant and average bitrates are supported by all version of WMV and with the introduction of WMV 9 support for interlaced video, non square pixels and Interpolation was added.
