The game development suite of programs called Gamebryo Lightspeed makes use of files that use the .nif file extension when creating characters for the game. The files contain 3D images and other resources needed by the game and have been used by such games as Elder Scrolls IV, Fallout 3 and Civilization IV.

It is also possible to open the nif files without using the Gamebyro software by using the program Nifskope.
