Shapefiles are data files used by Geographic Information Systems and usually are used to describe points, polygons and polylines which are then used to represent rivers and lakes etc.
The shapefile is a storage format using digital vectors to store the information and other associated resources.
Part of the shapefile is the shape index format file which uses the .shx file extension which is a file that should always be present along with the .shp and .dbf files.
