To run web applications in a web browser the use of the framework Java Web Start is needed, this framework was developed by Sun Microsystems which has since been taken over by Oracle. Java Web Start is installed as a part of the Java Runtime Environment.
Java Network Launching Protocol which uses the .jnlp file extension is used to show information such as the location of the package files plus parameters and resources needed by the program, these files use xml and are also able to download the Java Runtime Extension if it is not installed on your computer.
