The Quake engine was created in 1996 for the game Quake by id Software and made use of 3D rendering in real time. The engine reduced the complexity in the 3D graphics which in turn increased the speed of the game.
The Quake engine makes use of maps for the gaming areas. These maps contain the resources needed for a particular area of the game and has used a technique known as Binary Space Partitioning to reduce the 3D rendering by breaking up the polygons used into sets.
The sets then use the .bsp file extension but cannot be edited directly.
