Nero also known as Nero Burning ROM which was a word play with regards to the Emperor Nero who played the fiddle whilst Rome burnt in the year 64AD is a disc authoring and burning program developed by Nero AG which was also known as Ahead Software.

The program is available as a standalone product and as part of the Nero Multimedia Suite. All Nero burning products make use of the .nri file extension, when you create a compilation of data and choose the Image recorder instead of a physical optical drive then the image file created will be shown as filename.nri.
