Microsoft Access is a relational database management program that use the Microsoft Jet Database Engine in conjunction with a graphical user interface and various tools, the first version of the program were released in 1992.

With the advent of the 2007 version of the database program Microsoft Access a new file extension was added called .accdb which superseded the previous .mdb format.

The new format from Microsoft Access is not backwards compatible with earlier version but the use of a conversion utility makes it possible to open the newer files with older versions of the programs.
