3GP is used to describe both the format and the container that holds the video data, the format 3GP was designed for use with mobile telephones and is developed by the 3GPP Organization.
3GP was designed for use when streaming over mobile telephone networks whilst keeping the amount of storage needed as small as possible. Usually the video uses a resolution of no more than 320x240 and in most case the resolution used is 176x144. If the video has audio this is usually encoded as MP3 or AAC-LC.
The container used for 3GP is based on MP4 specically the definition MPEG-4 Part 14 but slightly modified so that the files stay as small as possible.
